10:30 Local Time, 09:30 GMT, 15:00 IST: Hello and welcome, we’re gearing up for Day 3 at The Oval and the important news is that it is dry and quite bright compared to the last couple of days at least. Still a bit cloud cover around but there is some blue that can be seen in between all the grey. The game is set up such that either team could grab the ascendancy from here. Sri Lanka have a great partnership going and if they can carry on, they have a fair chance of taking a first-innings lead. On the flip side, if England get a couple of quick wickets, they’ll be the ones taking a healthy first-innings lead so there’s plenty riding on this morning’s cricket.

Premature end once more today as the light fades. Been an action-packed day of Test cricket as 12 wickets fell in total. England resumed on 221/3 hoping to pile on the runs but that didn’t come to pass even as Ollie Pope carried on to make 154, adding another 51 to his overnight tally with England suffering a collapse of sorts owing to some indifferent batting. There were some cheap dismissals as they lost their 7 remaining wickets for a 104 runs to end up on 325 just before the end of the first session. In reply, Sri Lanka’s innings started poorly after Pathum Nissanka sold his partner, Karunaratne, down the river. While Nissanka looked assured and batted beautifully for his 64, wickets continued to tumble around him until skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis got together to arrest the slide. They set about building a partnership and ensured that Sri Lanka didn’t lose any more than the 5 wickets they already lost. Resuming after Tea, England were restricted to just bowling spin owing to bad light. They nearly had the breakthrough they were after when Dhananjaya chipped one to Hull at mid-on but the debutant shelled a straightforward catch. The partnership, therefore, carried on and breached the 100-run mark. Bashir, Lawrence and Root managed to extract some turn and bounce but there wasn’t enough to trouble the Sri Lankan batters. This game is poised beautifully and we’ll be back tomorrow to bring you all the action.
