"The ground's soggy. No sunlight for it to dry. Lots of soggy patches. Black soil surface - it has been under the hessian. It has underlying moisture. The Indian bowlers will enjoy bowling. It is a bit damp. There are patches where the bowlers will tempt the batters to play shots. Not easy to bat, especially in the first hour whenever the play starts," reckon Murali Kartik and Athar Ali Khan.
09:59 Local Time, 04:29 GMT: The umpires stride out for an inspection.
09:30 Local Time, 04:00 GMT: "The ground is still quite wet," reckons Murali Kartik on air.
09:20 Local Time, 03:50 GMT: The main cover is being peeled off.
09:00 Local Time, 03:30 GMT: Let's try this once more, shall we? Hello everyone and warm welcome to day three of the second Test between Bangladesh and India.
The last time an entire day's play was washed out in a Test in India was in Bengaluru in 2015 (Ind vs SA, days 2-5) - incidentally, the last time India opted to field first in a home Test before the ongoing one in Kanpur.
14:07 Local Time, 08:37 GMT: Here's the inevitable update, play on day two has been abandoned without a ball bowled.
13:58 Local Time, 08:28 GMT: "It has not been raining for a long time. But the covers are still on. Doesn't seem like any play would be possible today," reckons Ayush
13:10 Local Time, 07:40 GMT:
12:08 Local Time, 06:38 GMT: Super soppers are running on the covers. The light hasn't improved.
11:20 Local Time, 05:50 GMT: "There has been no rain for a while but the ground is still covered. They are not running rollers over the covers" - updates Aayush. It is almost lunch time and we have lost the first session.
10:05 Local Time, 04:35 GMT: "The drizzle has stopped," - pings Aayush from the ground. But he quickly adds,"But heavier shower expected in the next 10 minutes. So they aren't removing the covers as yet."
09:25 Local Time, 03:55 GMT, 09:25 IST: The two teams have arrived at the venue. Kohli leading the chit chat in the Indian balcony which includes Gambhir, Rohit and Jaiswal, while the Bangladesh players still have their bags on the shoulders as they check the conditions from the dressing room. It will be a while before they start their warm-ups, the covers are firmly in place and there's no activity by the groundsmen.
09:00 Local Time, 03:30 GMT, 09:00 IST: "The start of play for Day 2 in Kanpur has been delayed due to rains," is the update from BCCI on X.
08:45 Local Time, 03:15 GMT -- Day 2: It was a damp start to the second Test in Kanpur. Overnight rain causing an hour delay for the toss, bad light and rain then cutting the day short during the second session. We just got 35 overs of action after Rohit Sharma opted to bowl. The wicket was soft and the ball moved around but the Bangladesh openers did well to see off the opening burst from Bumrah and Siraj only to fall to Akash Deep. Shanto and Mominul added a 50+ stand to steady the innings but Ashwin trapped the skipper just before bad light stopped play. What does day 2 have in store for us? It is a gloomy morning and the covers were on a little while ago. Let's see what the official update is regarding the start time.
