Pitch report | Dinesh Karthik: With the natural progression of the pitch, it's going to turn more. Cracks have widened slightly more. Looks more abrasive. If you don't have the sweep in your armoury, what you need to do is step out. Santner has a cluster on a good length and you can't deal with that from the crease.
Jadeja is still wicketless in this Test and hasn't been able to adjust his pace to suit the conditions.
Day 3, 9am local: New Zealand are on the verge of making history in Pune, having outplayed India on this tour so far. Only once has a target of 300-plus been chased in this country, and they already have a lead of 301 with five wickets in hand. On a dry and turning pitch, the visitors - led by Mitchell Santner with the ball - exploited conditions better. And then their batters - led by captain Tom Latham - came up with a bunch of sweeps and reverse-sweeps to get good returns. In contrast, many of the current Indian batters don't go to the sweep very often. But in conditions like these, where some are turning big and some going straight from the same spot, will they change their approach in the fourth innings? We shall see. First, they need to bowl New Zealand out quickly.
Mitch Santner: It’s a great feeling to put ourselves in a position of winning a Test match here. It doesn’t look easy and we knew partnerships were key, glad we could perform well today. We spoke about trying to find the right speed on this wicket, as the day went along the slower ones started to spin and it was about trying to put it in the right areas. (On bowling wide of the crease) Just tried to change the angles, induce the play and miss and vary it out. I watched Washi go wide of the crease earlier, tried to do the same. (On performing well in India) I guess the pitches spin, which is nice. We don’t get that back home. The pitches here provide some good assistance for the spinners. I think the pitch is doing a little bit, it is not easy but we spoke about trying to fire shots and not sit there trying to scratch it out. On the flip side, I think when we bowl in the second innings, India will also try to place some shots. We just need to be accurate.
So New Zealand hold all the aces going forward in this Test. A lead of 301 already with five wickets yet to come.
