Pitch Report ft. Sunil Gavaskar: We could be in for a cracking final day in Melbourne. The pitch looks very very good. You will not find any cracks you generally find in Australia. There are no devils on the pitch as the last pair have shown. It is up to India if they won't chase the target or keep the series alive going into Sydney.
Australia already lead by 333 runs and the most runs scored on fifth day of a Test at the MCG is 334/6 by Australia (243/6) & England (91/0) in 1947/48 while the most runs by one team alone is 295/9 by Australia vs England in 1965/66. India will probably need to emulate their Gabba heist of 2020/21 where they hit 325 runs on the final day - the most scored on the final day to win a Test at any venue in Australia.
Australia have not declared. India won't mind that because it means less overs for them to bat and survive.
The recent Border Gavaskar Trophies have shown us one thing - never count your opposition out. Australia are on top right now but the pendulum can swing quickly if India show some intent. We have seen them chase 300+ totals in this country and though they will need to create a new record at this venue, they did something similar a few years ago. But first let's see if Australia continue batting or have they declared. It was surprising they didn't declare once the lead crossed 300 and have a crack at India last evening, it might be down to the memories of 2021 Gabba defeat and the fact that the pitch is still good for batting. Very rarely Tests go to day 5 these days with all three results possible but here we are.. Buckle up people we are in for an exciting final day's play. Live action coming up..
09:30 Local Time, 23:30 GMT, 04:00 IST -- Day 5: When Bumrah knocked over Alex Carey and the lead was 196 there was a sense of feeling that India might pull off another improbable victory Down Under. They still can but it has gotten a lot tougher thanks to two 50+ stands, first between Labuschagne and Cummins then between Lyon and Boland. The lead is 333 and we have 96 overs left in this Test. Which way would the game sway? For India, it was once again the Bumrah show; match after match, spell after spell, ball after ball, he has kept charging in and troubling the batters. He has sent down 50+ overs in this game - the most he has bowled since his debut - but he still kept steaming in, only once he erred and that was in the last over of the day when he had Lyon caught in the slip cordon but had overstepped, showing us all that he's still human. Siraj too seemed to have got his mojo back as he bowled a superb spell on either side of lunch to dismiss Khawaja and Smith, then came back to break Labuschagne's resistance. The pitch has stayed true, yes there has been some seam movement but nothing extravagant that the batters can't handle if they apply themselves. The bounce too has been consistent with the odd ball misbehaving only yesterday. Australia will hope it crumbles and give them a chance on this final day to take a 2-1 lead.

10th wkt pairs surviving 50+ balls in partnerships in each innings
Afaq Hussain & Haseeb Ahsan vs Eng Lahore 1961 (9.2 & 18.1 overs)
Nathan Lyon & Scott Boland vs Ind Melbourne 2024 (8.3 & 17.4 overs)
Siraj once again provided the important breakthrough as he trapped Labuschagne LBW after he had notched up his second 70 in the game. Starc soon followed and even then it looked India were slightly ahead as the lead was just 261. But the last two wickets have added 72 runs and stretched the lead to 333. India tried everything to break the final wicket partnership but they couldn't get past Lyon and Boland's resistance. Bumrah had Lyon caught at slip in the final over of the day but he had overstepped. Will Australia continue batting tomorrow?
18:06 Local Time, 07:06 GMT, 12:36 IST -- Stumps, Day 4:
