The players and the umpires make their way out to the middle. The sun is basking in all its glory in Cape Town.
Salman Agha: It wasn't our day, we wanted a better day. The beauty of Test cricket is you never know what the next day brings. We are confident that we are going to get them out early. We have to bowl at the stumps. There's not much happening. If you bowl at the stumps, you still get enough. There was not much spin, but there was drift because of the wind. I was trying to use that wind. Not much for the spinners and I was trying to hold one end. We are very confident, we want to start fresh today. We just want to get them out as quickly as we can.
Temba Bavuma: Quite happy, satisfied that I was able to make a meaningful contribution to the team, good to be back here at Newlands. Enjoying the way I batted, things were quite fluent from the beginning, I tried to carry the momentum, it was a good partnership with Rickelton. (On his ecastatic celebrating after scoring a hundred yesterday) I don’t think there wasn’t anything behind it, just happened like it, just emotions coming up, proving to myself that I’m still up for it. Happy to reach the Test championship final. I think it was more emotion coming out. Yesterday, it was more fluent from ball one, didn’t make a lot of misakes. Situation of the game as well, it was a bit delicate with us being around 80/3, During my Test career, I have always contributed for my team. To be able to go to and get the three-figure mark is always nice. To add more to that hundred, I have been contributing well for the team since the last 3-4 years.
Pitch Report: This has changed quite a bit, looks brown in colour with a little bit of grass here and there, has a nice mosaic look to it. You can see the footholes, dry and bare and as we progress in the game, we will see some spin, going into day 3 and more on day 4 and 5. You can back the surface to be consistent, there wasn’t much movement yesterday. There’s an area around the 6-7m area from both sides of the stumps which has something in it for the seamers, reckon Shaun Pollock and Mike Haysman
Here's our correspondent, Telford Vice, pinging from the venue: Good morning from another stunner of a summer’s day in Cape Town. It’s “Tweede Nuwe Jaar”, or Second New Year - a tradition that harks back to slavery in the Cape. Slaves would be given this day off, and they would celebrate it by parading the streets in ways that mocked their masters. These days, colourfully costumed minstrel marching bands compete for the title of Carnival Kings. No such clamour is expected at Newlands, where Ryan Rickelton needs 24 more runs to reach a double century and David Bedingham needs time at the crease to dispel doubts over his form. The way Pakistan bowled yesterday, both seem more probable than possible.
09:55 Local Time, 07:55 GMT, 13:25 IST: South Africa were dominant yesterday. There was only one small passage of play in which Pakistan flourished – later half of the first session. They picked up 3 wickets for just 11 runs and were threatening to change the flow of the game. But, Rickelton and Bavuma had other ideas. The duo combined not only to take their side to safe harbours but also pushed the opposition completely on the back foot with their 235-run stand. Rickelton is still looking solid as a rock and is approaching his maiden double ton and has Bedingham for company. Will Pakistan take the second new ball immediately today morning? Looks like making some early inroads will be their only chance to comeback into the contest. But, their seamers need to be on the money and not spray it around like they generally did yesterday barring Mohammad Abbas. More problems for Pakistan to ponder upon as and when they come out to bat in this Test as Saim Ayub has been ruled out of this game due to twisting his right ankle during fielding yesterday. The surface is conducive for strokeplay and the Proteas will further look to capitalise on the game-situation. Expect a riveting day of Test cricket...
Injury update on Saim Ayub Saim Ayub has been ruled out of further participation in the second men’s cricket Test against South Africa after twisting his right ankle while fielding. Saim underwent X-rays and MRI tests this afternoon and the reports have been sent to specialists in London for further advice on the treatment and time away from competitive cricket.
Ryan Rickelton: Exhausted actually but stoked. To come back from the last Test where I felt a bit uneasy to get a hundred let alone 170 today is special for me. It (opening the batting) is similar to three, the big difference is that you are on the field as soon as you get going. I practise a lot against the new ball always, so it's not something I am shy of and I like the challenge as well. (Batting at this venue) It's one of the best grounds in the world, stadium-wise, pitch-wise, I quite enjoy it. This is the place where I have managed to find a few runs and managed to click. Really happy. There's no denying it, it's a good wicket, it's going to turn as the game goes on. I just tried to keep simple. Opening the batting was mentally a different challenge but I just tried to keep it simple, stand still, play straight. That was my game-plan, to extend it for long periods of time was a bonus. (Hundred moment) Excitement, went and looked straight at my mum on the TV with tears on. I don't think it gets better than this - New Year's Test, day one in Newlands at Cape Town - very special. It's been a good day for us. Temba was superb as well. We need to really maximise this first innings and try to get as many as we can before Kesh and the seamers come into the game.
