Here's Kaushik with an interesting update: Bumrah bowling off a couple of steps. Even when he's going easy, it's remarkable how well he holds length. Nearly every ball is in that length markers laid down and in the channel to a right-hand batter. How much will India miss him today?!
Pitch report: The sun is out and there are a few cracks at one end of the pitch well. When cracks go up and down, there is nothing too much to worry about, but when the cracks go across the pitch that is when you see variable bounce. At one end there are a few footmarks as well which might help the spinners," reckon Deep DasGupta and Jonathan Trott
That new ball spell from Woakes: Chris Woakes may not have a great deal of pace, but his new ball spell yesterday was nothing short of exceptional. He was immaculate with his lines and lengths, but didn't have the kind of luck he would have wanted. Two close lbw shouts, and both turned out to be umpire's call (on hitting). Off his first 5 overs, 4 were maidens and there was just one ball that India scored against him. Woakes new-ball spell was also arguably one of his finest-ever in terms of control.
How good was Shubman Gill yesterday? England tried all the tricks against the Indian skipper, but Gill was just too good. The nip-backers, populating the off-side field, short balls...Gill had answers for everything. He used the crease well to negate the moving ball, and was very severe on anything short and wide. Although India lost Pant and Nitish in quick succession post-tea, there was never a sign of panic from the skipper. He kept waiting for the loose balls and played a pivotal part in helping India recover from 211/5.
How did the pitch play on day 1? Chris Woakes got the ball to move quite appreciably early on, and a few balls kept low occasionally. Not too much pace either. England bowlers did try the short ball tactic, but with very little success. When pitched on a shortish length, the ball kicked up awkwardly, but those were far and few. Bar that, it looked like an excellent batting deck and the overhead conditions remained bright and sunny. History tells us that day 2 should be no different.
There were quite a few questions around India's playing XI yesterday, but Shubman Gill was very clear (at the toss) that he desired batting depth in this game. Did he get what he wanted? Too early to say for now, but it was his bat that made all the talking yesterday. India found themselves in a tricky position at 211/5, and Gill played exceptionally well to stitch a near 100-run stand with Jadeja. Remember, the new ball is just 5 overs old, and expect England to come out attacking with the ball.
10:10 local, 14:40 IST: Hello and a warm welcome to the start of second day's play from Edgbaston.
Following his century at Headingley, Shubman Gill becomes the first Indian batter to score 100 runs on the opening day of a Test in England on two separate instances (13th Indian overall). Before this series, he had never before scored a century in the first innings/first day of a Test.
The second new ball did challenge the edges, but runs came at a brisk pace as well, helping the visitors get past the 300-mark. England will fancy their chances with the new ball, but India will have to be wary in the first hour and would hope for one of Gill or Jadeja to go really big if they are to inch closer to the 450-mark. Should be an exciting day of Test cricket, the weather looks perfect for cricket too. Do join us for all the fun from Edgbaston tomorrow. Cheers!!
Jaiswal looked all set to claim a well-deserved century and also engineered a crucial 66-run stand with skipper Gill for the third wicket. Perhaps due lack of strike (faced just 10 balls off the 6 overs before his departure) or loss in concentration at one stage, Jaiswal played a wild cut against Stokes and ended up offering a regulation catch to the keeper on 87. And when Pant joined Gill in the middle, the duo batted with great maturity until the former ran out of patience. He tried to take on Bashir and fell for the trap, holing out to long-on for 25. In the following over, Nitish shouldered arms against Woakes, only to find his stumps rattled. And then it needed the experience of Jadeja and the supremacy of Gill to avoid further damage before stumps. Gill, in particular, was very impressive with his strokeplay. For a major part of his innings, he batted outside the crease to negate the moving ball and also took calculated risks against Bashir to keep the scorecard ticking, scripting his 7th Test ton while at it. 18:33 Local Time, 17:33 GMT, 23:03 IST: India did exceedingly well to arrest what looked like a mini-collapse at the start of the final session, but England will be the happier side at stumps. Opting to bowl, Woakes bowled one of his best new-ball spells (in terms of control) and picked up the prized scalp of KL Rahul as he bowled 4 maidens off his first 5 overs. Jaiswal and Karun Nair then reversed the pressure back on the hosts with a flurry of boundaries. However, with minutes left to lunch, Carse got rid of the latter with a short ball and neutralized what appeared like a solid opening session for India.
