Pitch and Conditions: "It is a warm, humid evening in Chennai but it is breezy for another CSK home game. The pitch that is going to be used tonight has been used once before - the only game CSK has won so far (vs MI). The dimensions - 68 and 65 meters on the side, 80 meters down the ground. It is a slightly better wicket (than the MI game), it is black soil and very hard. It has got a nice covering of grass. Facing Dhoni in the other corner is a player that he and CSK helped resurrect. Ajinkya Rahane’s career got a second wind while playing for Chennai in 2023, and he now finds himself as the captain of the reigning IPL champions. However, KKR too are looking a shadow of their previous selves, with Andre Russell and Sunil Narine yet to really fire in this tournament. Rinku Singh has faltered, and Venkatesh Iyer seems to be burrowing under that hefty price tag as well. Nevertheless, they would be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes while travelling to a venue that will encourage their spinners. We aren’t too far from the toss, stick around…
But Dhoni’s captaincy can’t be a magic bullet that resolves all the problems of the franchise. Chennai haven’t had massive contributions from their middle order all season, and the one player who was in form in Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the tournament now. CSK need the new inductees like Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar to step up, while the experienced duo of Ashwin and Jadeja need to turn back the clock. MSD has been known to be a better spinner’s captain, so how he maneuvers his spinners would be interesting to see.
