Pitch report, Day 3: "Steamy day in Galle, warmest so far. Batters and bowlers were struggling with their footmarks but some work has been done. It's dry and a few cracks are opening. There's also some scarring created by Starc's follow-through. It will be challenging for the Sri Lankans to bat" says Russel Arnold.
Day 3: After two days of sheer domination by Australia, Sri Lanka find themselves in the doldrums. Australia piled on the runs mercilessly yesterday before finally declaring 646 and that wasn’t the end of Sri Lanka’s woes as they ended up losing three quick wickets before the close of play. Batting, that seemed to look so easy when the Australians were at the crease, suddenly became a challenge. The Australian spinners were able to extract loads of the turn and they had the batters in strife. Looking ahead to Day 3, things aren’t looking promising for the hosts I’m afraid. They’re staring at such a massive deficit and the Aussie bowlers have got their tails up. The need of the hour for Sri Lanka is a historic partnership.
17:36 Local Time, 12:06 GMT, 17:36 IST: That's Stump, Day2. Another day dominated by Australia. They made the Sri Lankan bowlers toil in the field over the last two days and declared with a massive total of 654/6. The visitors were 330/2 at stumps on day 1 and added more than 300 runs on the second day of the Test as well. Smith notched up his 35th Test century, while Usman Khawaja notched up a fantastic double century to put the Aussies in a commanding position. Josh Inglis didn't waste any time either as he scored a brisk century on his Test debut to make things worse for Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya bowled 60 overs - the most number of overs the left-arm spinner has bowled in an innings of a Test match. He did pick three wickets, while Vandersay claimed three wickets in his long spell. Sri Lanka's fielding wasn't up to the mark as they dropped many catches and allowed Australia to reach such a daunting total. In reply, Starc and Kuhnemann removed the openers early, while Nathan Lyon took Mathews' wicket. It was a sensational catch by Head at short leg that removed Mathews. With three more days remaining, Australia are miles ahead in the game. Going to be difficult for the Sri Lankan batters on the following days as the pitch will grip and turn a lot more. We'll be back tomorrow with the live coverage of Day 3, do join us.
Josh Inglis: Hasn't quite sunk in yet. Really special day, something I'm really proud of, nice for the family as well. Getting a boundary first ball is always nice. Because I've been around this group for a while, it didn't feel like an extra jump. Really nice to get this opportunity. Really special, nice to have your family around, mum and dad made the quick dash over. It's nothing that anyone can take away from me, a hundred on debut is really special and I'm proud of it.
17:31 Local Time, 12:01 GMT, 17:31 IST: The umpires reckon they can't go on as the drizzle picks up. This will likely be Stumps.
Light drizzle again. It has gotten quite dark.
