Early start today remember after half of the final session was washed out last evening.
Pitch report, Day 2: "We've had a lot of overnight rain but the Sun is breaking through now. No areas of concern. There were some balls that turned when the ball was hard. As the day went on, the ball started getting softer and slower. The Australians used their feet well and that's when the runs flowed. The pitch is looking good, still a batting track, lot more runs available for Australia" says Russel Arnold.
Steve Smith: Nice to get that out of the way (10,000 runs). Been a little time coming, had my opportunity in Sydney but let that slip, was nice to get it off my first ball yesterday. I feel like I'm batting nicely. Very different conditions to back home. Yesterday felt like a hybird wicket in terms of how it was when we were here last time. There was a bit going on at times and it was kind of consistent at times. I was just trying to put them under pressure whenever I got the opportunity and then just bat. Was nice to be in partnership with Khawaja for so long. Had a whole heap of video messages organized by the guys when we got back to the hotel last night. Cool to join such an elite group.
Day 2: Day 1 was one of torment for Sri Lanka as Australia piled on the runs with ease and elan. Sri Lanka’s bowling lacked venom and towards the end of the day, perhaps even enthusiasm. In fact they looked so bereft of ideas that they resorted to bowling a negative line with their spinners to stem the scoring. Earlier in the day though, Sri Lanka did create chances but unfortunately, they weren’t converted. The hosts shouldn’t be too disheartened though because even on the first day, there was some help for the spinners. They’ll need to pull their act together quickly though because Australia already have an imposing score - one that they’ll add to quickly should Sri Lanka repeat the mistakes they made yesterday.
A wicketless middle session followed as Australia piled on the runs. And the pattern continued in the final session before rain came and forced an early stumps with almost 9 overs to go. Khawaja put the Bumrah horrors behind him to rack up his 5th Test ton in Asia and he was particularly good against spin using the reverse-sweep to great effect. Smith meanwhile made it look easy after being dropped on 1.
16:41 Local Time, 11:11 GMT, 16:41 IST: That's stumps on day 1. It was inevitable once the rain came and the entire ground was covered.
16:22 Local Time, 10:52 GMT, 16:22 IST: The drizzle has arrived and out come the covers.
