Player of Match: Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram | Player of the Match: Not at all. Weird how things work out, you get a duck. Ultimately you get luck and it worked out. It will yes. Lord's is a place where every Test cricketer wants to play. Plenty of South African fans were there and it was one of those special days. It's not always one-sided, you absorb the pressure and it was about maximising the scoring options. He is one of the best in the world, we had plenty of banter with him, said to him he is one of the best. Tough to have got over the line. Lot of it came from him, he has always led from the front, found way a to score runs and those sort of knocks are something people will remember you for.
Kagiso Rabada: I can’t describe in words how I feel at this moment. Extremely happy. We played well throughout the season. We deserved to get into this position. There were people saying we didn’t play good enough oppositions but I think that’s rubbish. Australia are a really strong team and we had to be at our best to beat them. The last four days felt like a home game, thank you for turning up and keep turning up.
Shukri Conrad | Head coach, South Africa: Really ecstatic about these guys. Something we don’t talk about is the bigger picture in South Africa, this one is for South Africa. We got the best of the batting conditions. When our two senior pros put that stand together, that’s where the game was won. I was the one to say Temba shouldn’t keep going but the partnership was critical, it didn't matter what the flow was, they know better than the coaches anyway.
Coming back to how the game panned out - South Africa won a good toss and bowled in cloudy conditions and made good use of it to bowl Australia out for 212. Rabada was the star with a fifer with Smith and Webster making fifties. The former looked in great nick till the man of this final - Aiden Markram got him out caught at slip. Webster had his luck but survived through it to top-score with 72. In reply South Africa were bundled out for 138 as the Aussie seamers made merry. Only Bavuma and Bedingham made contributions with the rest faltering. Cummins was on fire as he took a six-fer and Australia gained a crucial 74-run lead. Both the first and second days saw 14 wickets fall as the batters struggled with the overcast conditions with the pitch playing its part. Australia started well in the 2nd innings until the opening stand was broken. From 28/0, Australia slipped to 73/7 as Ngidi - who was poor in the first innings came good and along with Rabada tore through Australia.
Tenacious Temba! He was sitting in a chair on the Lord's balcony looking downwards when 1 run was needed. He was still sitting and looking down even after Verreynne's winning runs sent Lord's into a loud roar with his teammates celebrating in the background. He then calmly clapped before being hugged by his teammates. That was cold!
Lungi Ngidi: I’m speechless right now. That spell the other day, broke the game open and I’m proud of that, that’s what kept me going. I’m very proud of what the boys have achieved, it’s been a lot hard work. The blood pressure is very high, we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved.
Marco Jansen: I don’t know what to say, was sitting there and just praying. Luckily we got the job done, just happy we won. There were a lot of nerves in the change room, lot of guys were quiet including me. To see the crowd here, supporting and cheering us, can’t ask for more. Unbelievable from Markram, what a player. Him and Temba, brilliant. That’s what dreams are made of, dreams are meant to be achieved and we’re going to celebrate.
The celebrations right after the winning runs were hit: Verreynne ran forward with arms aloft to his partner, hugged him. The South Africans in the balcony were up and lots of hugging, high-fiving and embracing going on. Interesting reaction from Bavuma - he just stood there as calm as ever, looking forward before Rickelton came up and gave him a hug. So calm was Bavuma in that moment as he soaked it all in. There's Graeme Smith, ABD and Shaun Pollock out there at the venue and they are as happy as anyone out there.
12:45 Local Time, 11:45 GMT, 17:15 IST: The class of 2025 from South Africa have done it! They have broken the 27-year jinx of not winning an ICC Trophy. In all those years, no country has endured such massive disappointments and heartbreaks that would numb any ardent supporter of theirs. This side of warriors led by that absolute warrior Temba Bavuma will go down in history as the one who finally broke that dreaded ICC curse. They will be feted as heroes on their return back home. And they have done it deservingly too, winning 8 Tests in a row to claim the title. A country which has gone so much both politically and socially finally gets the much-needed ICC win they have been craving for. What better venue than at the Home of Cricket to do it at - under pristine conditions for cricket with the sun out in all its glory. Perfect.

Mitchell Starc to Verreynne, FOUR, and there it is! Jubulile! Rejoice! There was Tshabalala finding the top right corner on opening day of a home World Cup. There was Francois Pienaar lifting an unfancied Rugby World Cup in front of a recently unified South Africa. And now there’s Kyle Verreynne hitting the winning runs against the mighty Aussies. A moment in time for the Proteas, a moment in time for South Africa! A moment in time for all Africa! Pitched up full and slanting across outside off, Verreynne reached out and carved it away through point, in the gap and it raced away!
Just one needed and what drama! Nervous excitement all around, no one in that South African dressing room is moving a muscle till this is done

Mitchell Starc to Verreynne, no run, high full-toss on middle, Verreynne certainly didn't expect that, but bunts it back awkwardly
83.2
Mitchell Starc to Verreynne, no run, appeal from Australia and turned down! Audacious from Verreynne, length delivery on off-stump, Verreynne went right across his stumps looking to scoop it over the keeper and it zipped through, appeal from Carey and he looked confident. Guess what? UltraEdge shows a spike but Australia had no reviews left to challenge this!
AB de Villiers is on his feet, his arms wrapped around his son who also watches on
Australia have brought the field up, no easy singles on offer
