Despite losing close to five sessions, the Dhaka Test has ended inside four days. While there'll be plenty of talks regarding the pitch, New Zealand will be pleased with the way they bounced back after losing the first Test by 150 runs. On a track where almost every batter struggled, Glenn Phillips managed to score 87(72) and 40*(48). He also fittingly hit the winning runs.
The two captains receive the trophy
Tim Southee: It was a a bit of scrape there, nice to come out on the right side of it.
Taijul Islam | Player of the Series
Glenn Phillips | Player of the Match
Najmul Hossain Shanto: The bowlers did a great job,, All four bowlers bowled well. Very proud how everyone chipped in the field.
After conceding a 7-run lead, Bangladesh scored 338 in their second essay at Sylhet. But they could only muster 144 here in Dhaka. Zakir Hasan top-scored with 59 but he didn't receive much support from his team-mates. Ajaz finished with a 6-fer and the Kiwis needed 137 runs to square the series. The chase was always going to be a tricky one. Shoriful nipped out Conway and the Taijul-Mehidy duo came to the party to reduce NZ to 69/6. That's when Santner (who didn't play the first Test) joined the hero of the first innings - Phillips.
Southee turned to spin after five overs on the opening day and the first ball from Ajaz Patel turned a long way with extra bounce. At that very instant, everyone knew that spinners would rule the roost in this Test. While the two left-arm NZ spinners picked up two wickets apiece in the first session, it was Mushfiqur's brain fade movement (obstructing the field by handling the ball) that triggered a collapse as Bangladesh got bundled out for 172. The hosts, thanks to their spinners, fought back and reduced the Kiwis to 46/5. The game had progressed at a rate of knots on the first day itself. The next four sessions got washed out without any play. Less than 32 overs were bowled on day three but there was plenty of action. NZ, who were tottering at 97/7, managed to take a lead of 8 runs, thanks to Glenn Phillips's counterattacking 72-ball 87. Just like the first Test, after the first two innings, there was hardly anything to separate the two sides.
15:12 Local Time, 09:12 GMT, 14:42 IST: New Zealand have levelled the series 1-1.
